Nestled between the Durance and the Asse Valley, Bras-d’Asse overlooks the picturesque ruins of its old medieval village, Vieux Bras.
History & heritage
Founded in 1025 around a chapel and an early castle, the fiefdom became a barony in 1242. Having sided with the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion, the castle was destroyed; the ruins of Le Vieux Bras — towers, walls and the Romanesque Church of Saint-Nicolas — bear witness to this past. Abandoned in 1913, the old village has been painstakingly restored by a handful of enthusiasts.
