History & heritage
Champtercier is the birthplace of Pierre Gassendi (1592–1655), a Provençal scholar, astronomer, physicist and philosopher who was a contemporary of Descartes and who loved to observe the sky from the village where he grew up. The village has retained the character of a rural market town in Haute-Provence, nestled amongst farmland and wooded hills.

The village is situated on the hills to the west of Digne-les-Bains, in a rolling landscape of fields, woods and hamlets, opening out onto the Pre-Alps.
