History & heritage
Draix is a small rural commune in the Upper Bléone region, which has long been devoted to livestock farming. Its landscape of black marl, amongst the most eroded terrain in the world, has become a leading scientific research site thanks to the Draix-Bléone Research Observatory, and is home to one of Andy Goldsworthy’s ‘Refuges d’Art’.
Geography & setting
The village is nestled amongst the rugged hills of the ‘black earth’ (Jurassic marl) to the north-east of Digne-les-Bains, in the upper Bléone Valley.
