A village in the upper Asse valleys, on the edge of the Haut-Verdon, Moriez is home to a surprising array of heritage, from prehistoric salt to ancient castles.
History & heritage
First mentioned as early as the 11th century and home to a castrum in the 13th century, Moriez is home to the Church of Saint-Barthélemy (15th century), two castles (the Vieux Château and the Château Neuf, 16th–17th centuries) and a fountain dating from 1644. Unusually, the site is home to one of the oldest known salt works in Europe, and a Bronze Age hoard was unearthed there, now on display at the Quinson Museum.
Geography & setting
Situated at an altitude of around 900 metres, in the upper valleys of the Asse (a Natura 2000 site), near Saint-André-les-Alpes and the Train des Pignes, Moriez is a well-preserved mid-mountain village.
